Blog post #3 - More Research

1. The society holds the primary cause of juvenile crime.
In this article, the writer claims that the primary cause of juvenile crime lies on the society. Competitive environment, lack of security in the school environment and parental guidance at home are some of the factors that have responsibility for the rise of juvenile crime rate in Korea.

2. Law dedicated to juvenile delinquents in America and Korea.

In America, Oklahoma, a 16 year old boy murdered his family members. Even if he is not an adult, the law of Oklahoma regarded him as an adult in court. This shows how severe the law is, even to the teenagers.

From the other article, it can be inferred that many Koreans want to fix the juvenile law to lower the age that define juvenile in juvenile law just like it is in U.S in order to punish more teenagers in a harsh way. Many Koreans want to follow the way how U.S. deals with juvenile delinquents, which are described in the article. The eyes towards juvenile delinquents are very cold.

3. Juvenile Delinquent in a other country.

This TV program is called ‘Beyond Scared Straight’ and it teaches juvenile delinquents by letting them have an experience in jail. This shows the viewpoint that people think juvenile delinquents are potential criminals and they should be treated harshly.

  1. Meaningful news articles and video clip. I agree with the viewpoint of the first news article which says that 'the society holds the primary cause of juvenile crime'. Nobody is born to be evil, in my opinion - the society determines many things about each person and juvenile delinquents are not free from the social influences. About the second news article, I have a different view. I think teenagers have their own discretion and the juvenile delinquencies are the results of it. So they should be responsible about their behaviors, even by diminishing the age limit to be punished. I think we can talk about it further more in class discussion time. From the third video clip, more than anything else, I found it very interesting that most of the prisoners and juvenile delinquents are black people. I wonder the relation between the racial group and the rate of juvenile delinquency.

  2. I agree that environment make delinquent juveniles, but I'm not sure if we have to give them exemption because of their age. In our society, there was an killing accident that 9-year-old boy throw a brick from a roof of an apartment and a woman died due to that brick in Oct, 2015. It made our society anxious because if we don't have any methods to stop them from doing such a dangerous act or behavior, we are not sure we wouldn't experience such an absurd accident. Our law has no ways to punish him, so he got exemption and we are not sure accidents like this would not happen. I personally hope that we would introduce a law that makes first-degree murderer regarded as an adult even though he/she is a juvenile.

    1. Yes, I partially agree with your statement. I also think young first-degree murderers should be punished more harshly in order to stop recidivism. But I do not think giving exemptions for juvenile delinquents should disappear completely. What our blog wants to say is, not to think every juvenile delinquents should be protected. We simply want to say that there 'are' young offenders who need help, because the over generalization of them might hurt them.

  3. I agree strongly with the first article. I don't think that many of the juvenile delinquents actually meant anyone any harm with their crimes. They are young and foolish, and there was no one to guide them and tell them that certain things are intolerable in the society. I believe that this is the reason why our attitude toward this subculture group should be about love and guidance rather than punishment. I am aware of the fact that a lot of people in Korea are in favor of forcing on more strict measures toward this group, but I do not think is the right approach. If we truly care for the well being of the entire society we should do all our best to make juvenile delinquents to not continue on with this phase after they become older. This is the way how we can lower the crime rate.

  4. Thank you for meaningful resources. I have known that there is public opinion to modify age limits. In some places, like Oklahoma, it regard a teenager as an adult under some conditions. And he/she is sent to an adult prison. What I want to emphasize is that they should be treated in different ways. I don't mean that we should take their crimes lightly. They should take responsibility for their wrondoings. However, they are young. They can be rehabilitated. They are future members of our society. In this sense, they need more care from our society. Instead of seeing them just in cold eyes, we should give our hands first.
